Is there an OPMC Mosque?

a diverse muslim community connecting as we practice & celebrate islam

The short answer is “No, there isn’t a mosque yet.”

Alhamdulillah, the Muslims in the greater Oak Park area have maintained a community while holding jummah prayer each Friday at Kinfolk CoLab, coming together for potlucks in the greater Oak Park area, breaking fast with Ramadan iftars, and celebrating Eid prayer at the Columbus Park Refectory. These events and other activities have been a vital part of the community for the past 4 - 6 years.

All the while, we have been fundraising for a mosque that we hope to someday have, inshaAllah.

The goal is to fundraise a minimal amount of $600,000 to target a space, whose total purchase amount is estimated at $1.2 million. There is not a specific targeted space given the market in the greater Oak Park area and the requirement of needing $600,000 to target a space.

How much has been fundraised so far?

Approximately $120,000 (corrected amount) has been fundraised so far for a mosque. We will soon begin a Ramadan mosque campaign to fundraise further, inshaAllah.

Alhamdulillah, not only do we have dedicated donors within the community who believe in our fundraising efforts, OPMC has been offered a substantial offer of a qard al-hassan (non-interest loan) from a foundation outside of the community once we reach the critical $600,000, inshaAllah.

Are these mosque donations zakat-eligible?

No, funds donated towards the OPMC Mosque Fund are not zakat-eligible.

Expenses that are considered zakat-eligible are of the following 8 categories: the poor, the needy, the collectors of zakat, those whose hearts are to be won over, captives, those burdened with debt, in the cause of Allah (SWT), travelers.
